    General News

GENERAL NEWS from Tom Dowling 3/10/03:
If you need a charger key (opens the old-style public inductive and conductive chargers), just send a note explaining where you might need to use the key, and include your snail mail address to keyorders@evchargernews.com, and we'll mail you one.

GENERAL NEWS from Tom Dowling revised 2/18/03:
There is a new number to call for conductive charging station service, 888-820-9909. This is the Southern Company in Atlanta. They are now handling service dispatch for conductive chargers.

However, EVI confirms that they will be maintaining a backup service line at 877-438-3844. If you have any problems getting service from the 888 number, use the 877 number.

The service problem report number for inductive chargers remains 888-890-4638 (888-890-GOEV). You may also report conductive charging station problems to this number.

It's best to call from the site with your cell phone, and be ready to answer questions, check serial numbers, etc. Leave a message if necessary, with a phone number where you can be reached.

GENERAL NEWS from Tom Dowling revised 3/20/03:
The emergency charging locations pages have been updated again, and are updated regularly. We now have 73 emergency charging locations listed! There are 42 locations in Northern California, and 31 in Southern California. If you have not signed up, use the form at the link above to do so. We need more Southern California locations!

GENERAL NEWS from Tom Dowling and Gil Dawson revised 2/18/03:
MapBlast! is still non-functional, due to changes made by MapBlast!. The EV Charger News site is currently using Tiger maps, from the U.S. Census Bureau. The MapBlast! map links on the EV1 Club site are non-functional. EV Charger News is considering moving to Microsoft Streets & Trips for our maps.
Here's an example from the new Fair Oaks entry below.
We are interested in feedback and other ideas. E-mail: .com

General NEWS from Tom Dowling 2/12/03, revised 9/15/03:
Correction to NEMA plug and receptacle link: NEMA Plugs and Receptacles

GENERAL NEWS from David Franklin 2/3/03:
Anyone experiencing [a TAL RAV4 EV charger] "power on, power off" problem occurring in approximately 10 second intervals should contact Francisco at Clean Fuel Connections. I have seen this type of thing before. While you can still charge a vehicle in this state, it is abnormal behavior that is apparently related to a defect in the temp control unit.
    Francisco's email address is fforonda*at*cleanfuelconnection.com.

GENERAL NEWS from Tom Dowling 2/1/03:
ICEing by the Tire Shop is a common practice at Costco, and can be looked on as a good thing. Much better to be ICEd by the Tire Shop than by an irresponsible shopper who can't be found. Tire Shop vehicles prevent other vehicles from parking there. Just go into the tire shop and ask that the ICEing vehicle be moved so you can charge, and you'll nearly always get a polite and prompt response; the vehicle will be moved, and you can charge.

GENERAL NEWS from various sources 3/21/03:
Some Saturn retailer chargers have been removed. If you are planning to charge at a Saturn dealer, call ahead to check availability.
Everybody, please report actual removals to updates@evchargernews.com (or use the "I was there"online form. so that we can keep our listings up to date. Thanks.

The only EV1 compatible charger at the Colma BART station, which I use on a daily basis, has been broken for the past two days. I've reported this to BART, and spoken to the office responsible for getting them fixed. They seem to be attentive to the problem, but it's not fixed yet. I'll update this email as soon as it gets fixed.

BAY AREA news from Nick Carter 9/25/02:
The connector on the Avcon at Costco Novato has had one of its pins broken - it still works , tho' - I used it the other day but it doesn't seat perfectly in the receptacle. This has been reported for repair

BAY AREA news from drskerr 9/4/02:
The power to both chargers at the Larkspur ferry terminal was off this morning. The supervisor, Ken, was very prompt in radioing someone to turn it on, but there still was not time for the current to get restarted before I had to leave on the ferry. So the paddle was left inserted waiting for the power to start. I had read the owner's manual but couldn't remember if this situation was discussed. I was relieved to find that this is apparently not a harmful practice--the car was charged and nothing seemed broken when I returned.

BAY AREA news from Jerry Hudgins 7/13/02:
A fellow EV driver asked me recently for details on a new inductive charger in Fairfax (CA). These I could not provide, as I'd heard nothing about said charger prior to that. However, I remembered the question this evening when passing through Fairfax, and I spent a few minutes poking around until I found it. (Yes, it's a very small town.)

The charger is a small-paddle Gen II+ unit, located at the edge of the municipal corporation yard in the redwood grove next to City Hall. Unfortunately, it is *not* available for public use. I spoke to the police dispatcher about it, who verified this with her sergeant. It was installed for use only by the city's Nissan Hypermini, which was indeed plugged-in when I found it.

Closest public chargers are large-paddle units at Saturn of Marin in San Rafael, and small-paddle units at the Golden Gate Ferry terminal in Larkspur. I also have a large-paddle unit in Point Reyes Station, available in emergencies or by prior arrangement.

BAY AREA news from Tom Dowling 6/12/02:
The Board of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, BAAQMD, recently voted to continue their "Charge!" program, which funds up to 40% of the cost of public charger installations. See www.baaqmd.gov/planning/plntrns/charge.htm for details. This is one of the only charger installation assistance programs running right now. Let's get some public sites to apply for this program!

BAY AREA news from Jon Lee 4/13/02:

Performance Art Garage in SF: Ifyou use the garage on a performance night, be prepared to pay a flat parking rate of $9.50 instead of the hourly rate schedule. Rating = 3.
San Francisco City garages normally have a policy that allows you to leave within five minutes of your arrival without any charge.

    News for Sacramento and Vicinity

SACRAMENTO COUNTY NEWS from Tom Dowling 8/30/03:
    Respondent Name: = Tom Dowling
Date and time of visit:: = 8/18/2003 4pm
Name of charging location:: = Fair Oaks Library
City and State:: = Fair Oaks, CA
Did you charge here:: = Yes - RAV4 EV small paddle
Please describe problems, if any:: = Charger stops with an E1 error after a few minutes of charging. Problem has been reported to Clean Fuel Connection.

SACRAMENTO AREA NEWS from Ed Huestis 6/9/03:
8/1/03: Per Ed Huestis, this charger has been repaired and is now in operation.
The small-paddle inductive charger at the Dixon Multi-Modal Transportation Center (MMTC) in downtown Dixon at 275 North Jefferson Street has been vandalized and needs to be repaired. It sounds like it just needs a new cord and paddle. The problem has been reported to CFCI. The paddle is badly damaged (almost broken in two) but the unit still appeared to have power (hit the test button and the lights came on).

SACRAMENTO AREA NEWS from Tom Dowling 3/10/03:
The form for free EV parking permits in Sacramento City garages is available here . No charge for the permit. Just fill out the form (2 pages), enclose a copy of your registration (showing "E" for motive power), and mail to the address at the top of page one. A cover letter requesting prompt return and highlighting your mailing address would probably help.

SACRAMENTO AREA NEWS from Tom Dowling 2/24/03:
I'm reporting an intermittent problem at the Vacaville Park and Ride (Regional Transportation Center) --
At this same site, two new TAL SPI chargers have recently been added, and are now in operation.
The problem is with the far left-hand charger, a Gen 2+ small-paddle charger. The charger seems to work fine with EV1s and S10s. However, with RAV4 EVs, the charger may charge for ten or fifteen minutes, and then halt with an E2 error. That error would seem to indicate a vehicle fault, but there is actually no vehicle fault. This has been reported to CFCI for repair.
You can try restowing the paddle, then reinserting it in the opposite direction. This sometimes works in a pinch. Stay with the car, though, to be sure you are getting a charge. Better, use one of the TAL chargers here instead.

SACRAMENTO AREA news from Tom Dowling 9/29/02:
The small-paddle Gen II charger at the Davis St. Park and Ride in Vacaville was acting up on Sunday. It charged for ten or fifteen minutes, then went into an E1 charger fault error. I was unable to reset it, so I moved to Vacaville City Hall nearby. This may be an intermittent problem. When I checked a couple of hours later, the charger seemed to be ok. This has been reported to Clean Fuel Connections. [See 2/24/03 report above for more current status. -Ed.]

SACRAMENTO AREA NEWS from Tom Dowling 2/24/03:
The SPI charger at Regal Cinema, Natomas Marketplace, off Truxel, has been experiencing a high level of ICEing. Listing. Sacramento City Parking enforcement (916) 264-5354 may respond under the new Section 22511. Next time the spot is blocked, try to get a license number, make of vehicle, color of vehicle. That will let you fill out the form or call in the report. That will at least result in the offender getting some sort of mailed warning notice from parking enforcement -- which could do some good.

SACRAMENTO AREA NEWS from Tom Dowling 2/12/03:

    Darell Dickey reports on 2/10/03:
Parking here is somewhat restricted. Not a real problem, but there are UCD vehicles here, and signs indicate more restrictions than are actually enforced.
The Gen2+ seems to ALWAYS trip. I'd say 90% of the times I use that charger it needs to be reset. Reporting to UCD maintenance.

SACRAMENTO AREA NEWS from Tom Dowling 2/12/03:

SACRAMENTO news from Steve Revenaugh 4/3/02:
Just wanted to let you know that the GEN 1 charger in Davis has been swapped out for a TAL unit. [This was an inoperative large paddle, now an operating small paddle unit.  Confirmed operational 4/6/02.  --Ed.]

SACRAMENTO AREA NEWS from Tom Dowling 2/12/03:
Most locations on the UC Davis campus require parking permits, obtainable at ticket machines at the entrances to the lot.
Parking permits are required Monday through Friday 7am-10pm
Most EV spaces are marked for 4 hours maximum parking
UC Davis locations should be marked restricted parking, pay parking.
There is a request in progress to make EV parking free on the campus.

The SPI is working, but needs signage. Has a temporary barricade horse with sign.

SACRAMENTO news from Darell Dickey 4/2/02:
The Arden Fair Gen2 is back up and running. [Two small paddle chargers here. One was down, now back up. --Ed.] [This charger was later down for RAV4 EVs only, but that problem has been remedied as of 1/25/03. -- Ed.]

SACRAMENTO news from Steve Revenaugh 4/3/02:
Fuel Cell Partnership in W. Sac. is scheduled for a small-paddle conversion. This is the last small-paddle conversion scheduled.
Update from Tom Dowling 6/12/02: I was there a few days ago, and it is still large-paddle.

SACRAMENTO area news from Tom Dowling 4/5/02:
There are now two Avcon conductive charging stations at the railroad depot in Colfax (!), at the 2500 foot level East of Auburn right off I-80. The power was off the last time I was there. I reported the problem, and I am told it is resolved. I will re-check as soon as I get a chance. Tahoe/Reno, anyone?
Update from Tom Dowling 6/12/02: I checked there today, and found both Avcon chargers operating just fine. ICEing is a problem, but with the long cords the AVCON chargers have, you will almost certainly find some way to park and charge.

SACRAMENTO news from Tom Dowling 4/9/02: (ID: 95814_14)
Yes, the 7th and G Garage in Sacramento does accept City of Sacramento EV parking permits for free parking. A photo and more details coming soon.
    Additional information 2/12/03:
7th & g is a county garage, not city. City permit not valid, but not needed.... EV parking is free, no permit needed.
SPI (gen 2+) E2 error after a while on RAV4 EV, reset, ok. Reported to CFCI. Works OK for S10E and EV1, but fails intermittently on RAV4 EV.

SACRAMENTO AREA news from Steve Revenaugh (SMUD) 8/20/02:
The new EV Public Charging Station (EVPCS) at the Fair Oaks Library (11601 Fair Oaks Blvd.) is operational. Parking & recharging are free to the public at each of the two reserved spaces, served by one GEN 2 Plus and one ICS200-B.
Sample of proposed new map format.

SACRAMENTO AREA news from Steve Revenaugh (SMUD) 8/26/02:
The North Highlands Library EVPCS should be on-line in the next couple of weeks.

SACRAMENTO AREA news from Ed Huestis 7/23/02:
We had two of our small-paddle inductive chargers go down in the median island here at Vacaville City Hall and have not heard when they will be repaired or replaced. (There are still three operational small-paddle chargers at Vacaville City Hall.)

SACRAMENTO area news from Tom Dowling 6/26/02:
Update by Tom Dowling 6/26/02: I visited the former Saturn of Roseville location again on 6/26. The charger has now been removed. This is a DOWN LOCATION, and will not be coming back. Roseville Toyota is right next door, for emergencies or prearranged charging.
    Earlier news below:
Tom Dowling 6/18/02: I was there again on 6/17. Power is on, and the signage is less intimidating. I would now consider this a problem location, not a down location. Charging is possible here, but this is not the best of locations. One large-paddle charger. Roseville Toyota is right next door, in case of emergency, with one small-paddle charger, subject to their own sales and service requirements.
Saturn of Roseville has closed. Signs at the site read "Lexus of Roseville coming in 2003; for Saturn service see Saturn of Elk Grove." However, John L. Sullivan Chevrolet across the street has a large Saturn Service sign, and has announced plans for a Saturn retail facility in Roseville, as well as one in Sacramento. There is one large-paddle charger still installed at the former Saturn of Roseville location, but the power has been turned off. Also, the whole area has been posted as a no-parking, no-trespassing zone by the Roseville Police. This is now a DOWN LOCATION. The charger will probably be removed soon.

SACRAMENTO area news from Ron Purnell 4/10/02:

Davis City Parking Garage is now a small paddle charger, and it works. The large paddle charger had not worked since 12/01.

UC Davis Parking Garage now has one large paddle and one small paddle charger serving a total of 4 EV parking spaces. There is also one conductive charger that shares those 4 spaces. Restrictions still apply on number of hours.

SACRAMENTO area news from Darrell Dickey 4/10/02:
Maita Toyoto, 2500 Auburn Blvd, Sacramento 95821 seems to be a new small paddle site. The charger is NOT public, but any RAV driver can charge there with priority given to Maita service. The one charger is located at the back of the last service bay. They would not allow Darrell into the service bay to take a picture. They have one small paddle and one AVCON conductive.

Ventura COUNTY NEWS from Bruce Tucker 2/27/03:
Subject: 91360_2 Oaks Mall SPI charger repaired
I just sent in an "I was there" report stating that the SPI charger at the Oaks Mall has been repaired. Hooray!
SPI Charger has been repaired. Wakes up upon removal of paddle.
The small paddle inductive charger at the Oaks Mall in Thousand Oaks CA (which has been broken since last september) has been repaired as of this week. I stopped by this morning and saw the lights wake up when I pulled the paddle. Thanks go to the Oaks Mall for having the charger repaired by CFC.
If you have a chance, stop by and charge up - and let the Oaks Mall know you appreciate their support of the EV charging infrastructure. My contact there was John Corkery.

VENTURA COUNTY news from Charles H McColllister 9/17/02:
The charger at the Oaks Shopping Center in Thousand Oaks is out as of today.
    See new news 2/27/03 above.

VENTURA COUNTY NEWS from Bruce Tucker 1/25/03:
There are two brand new charging station in the Thousand Oaks, CA area. Both of these charging stations just became operational within the last month. [Formal listings will appear on the main EV Charger News listings soon. -- Ed.]

    1. The first is at the National Park Service (Santa Monica Mountain Recreation Area) Visitor Center at 401 W Hillcrest Dr. (just north of, and 100' above, the Oaks Mall). There are two SPI Magnechargers and two double-headded Avcon EVI-200 Chargers. There is a gate that can close off the entrance, but they say they don't close it.

To get to chargers follow the brown signs to the Nation Park Service. Take the Lynn Rd exit off the Ventura Fwy (101), turn east (right) onto Hillcrest. Take the first left you can (second stoplight) onto McCloud Ave. Go one short block to the Visitor Center driveway (A.K.A. Civic Center Drive) and drive to the parking lot at the top of the hill. The charging station is immediately to the right.

    Thomas Guide grid: 526-E7

There is one parking stall for each of the SPIs, but there is a green striped stall between the two you could squeeze another car into. Each Avcon station is mounted between two stalls, and has two heads to service both.
There is a nice view, and you can visit the Visitor Center during business hours, or walk down the hill to the Oaks Mall (maybe 1/2 mile total). Of course, you have to walk back UP the hill afterwards.

    2. The second location is the parking lot at "Satwiwa". It is located in the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area - Rancho Sierra Vista-Satwiwa, 4122 W. Potrero Rd in the Dos Vientos area of Newbury Park.

There is one double headed Avcon charger (EVI-200) in front of the rest room building in the parking lot.

To get to Satwiwa, Take the Lynn Road Exit off the northbound Ventura Fwy (101) and turn left. Travel southwest 5.6 miles. Lynn Road will become Potrero Road just before the park entrance (but you won't notice the change). Turn south at the brown park entrance sign onto (the unmarked) Big Sycamore Canyon Rd, and pass under a big entry arch. Follow the road for about .8 miles until it ends at a (usually locked) gate. Turn left into the parking lot.

From southbound Ventura Fwy, take the Wendy Rd exit and follow Wendy for 4 miles until it intersects Lynn Rd, turn right (west), and follow Lynn Rd for 1.7 miles to the park entrance.

    Thomas Guide grid: 555-D5

Satwiwa is at the head of the Big Sycamore Canyon, and the hiking trail leads through the Santa Monica Mtns all the way down to the ocean at Sycamore Cove Beach. There are also occasional events at the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center an easy 1/2 mile hike down the closed road.

Responding to your request when charger fixed....
There is a LPI and AVCON charger both in working condition.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY NEWS from Kenny Fried 3/8/03:
Last time I was in the area, I checked the chargers at the Broxton St. parking structure, there was only 2 LPI's, and an Avcon. The other 4 LPI's are gone, only holes in the wall were they used to be.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY NEWS from Kenny Fried 3/4/03:
The Avcon Charger at the Park & Ride on Del Mar Ave ( do not confuse this with the other San Gabriel Park & Ride, on Mission Ave, which is O.K. as far as I know ) was completely destroyed by vandals today, the LPI next to it is O.K., still works.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY NEWS from Sam Thurber 3/4/03:
    GMATV, Torrance, CA
They have removed all the small paddle chargers.
    Only large paddle chargers available.
Listing states that there are small paddle chargers available.

I was at the Long Beach Aquarium today, the LPI is still out, but the Hyatt Hotel is just across the street, just one block away, and has 1 LPI that seems to be working. Just pull into the circle at the front of the hotel, then go straight ahead to parking level P3, it's about the first parking space on the right. $1.00 for 30 min., $13.00 for 24 hrs. The 2 LPI's at the L.B. Sports Arena - Convention Center parking structure still seem to be OK. -- On 3/2/03 Will Korthof wrote:

LOS ANGELES COUNTY NEWS from Sheldon Katz 2/27/03:
I parked in LAX lot six for ten days at no charge. There were no surprises at the check out gate. It is easier for the cashier if you have a piece of paper with your name, address, phone number, drivers license number, and vehicle license number that you just give to them. They always call the supervisor over, but it takes only a few extra moments.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY NEWS from Jeff Church 2/3/03:
    Re: LAX parking
I put the following personal data, three copies to the page:

==================================== "Driver information for free Electirc Vehicle Parking at LAX Terminals 1 or 6."
Your Name, Home Address, Telephone Number,
Make, Model and License plate number of your Electric Vehicle, and your California Driver's license.
Most of the folks will take the slip of paper and let you right out, after looking to see that the license plate matches.
    =================================
Also, If you are not charging, PLEASE do not block a Small paddle charger. Park at a large paddle charger instead. The chargers have been re-arranged so as to make a Small paddle charger accessable to almost every space if necessary.
    Enjoy,
    Jeff

LOS ANGELES COUNTY NEWS from Jeff Church 2/20/03:
[Paraphrased. - Ed.] The best and safest way to get to the chargers in LAX Terminal 6 is to use the North South road. Enter enter structure 5, (because the entrance is on that N-S road, which is MUCH safer) and just drive through into 6 and go to the chargers.
We believe the charger count at LAX Terminal 6 is now:
    12 SPI
    7 LPI
    1 Avcon
... we are verifying the count.

LOS ANGELES County news from Jeff Church 9/18/02:
EV1 drivers: be aware that LAX lot 6 contains a mix of small and large paddle chargers.
If possible, use a large paddle charger so that the small-paddle chargers can be saved for RAV4 EV drivers! Today there were 10 EV's in the LAX Structure 6 parking facility parked at chargers. There were only 2 TAL Small paddle inductive chargers available. 3 EV-1's that could have used an LPI charger were using a small paddle charger.

There were a whole bunch of unused LPI's. Am I the only one who is concerned about the fact that the (Most) RAV4-EV's can't use the large paddle chargers? Isn't it common sense to use a Large paddle charger first if your vehicle can use it?

It's to the point that this seems important. It doesn't affect me but I bring this up for the RAV4EV (spi) drivers.

    Hi everyone,

Wanted to let you know that the chargers are operational at the Balboa Victory Park and Ride. We permanently fixed the problem out there, so they shouldn't trip off anymore.

There are two SPI chargers and one conductive charger at that location. We are planning to replace one SPI with one LPI and move the SPI to Encino Balboa Golf Course to spread out the SPI locations.

    2. The chargers at city hall have been removed owing to construction, and will be gone for at least a year. (The tragedy is that these are SPI's and I cannot get the city to install them elsewhere. Still trying, though.)
    3. the chargers at the courthouse are not, have never been, and are not planned to be for public use.
Regarding Santa Monica City Hall 9/2/02:

Have they put it up again? It was taken down as part of the construction of the new Public SafetyCenter behind City hall. It was supposed to be down for about a year, and then it was to eventually be re-installed in a new multi-lewel parking structure to be built. i haven;t been down there for a while. When's the last time you used it?
    Kenny Fried:
I use it almost every weekend when I go to the beach (I think it's pay parking during work hours. It's underneath the solar array between the convention center and the police station. You can't miss it, there are 6 or 7 city RAV4's parked there. There are three public charging spots.
    Bob Seldon:
Santa Monica does not having charging anymore at City Hall. Some sites list the courthouse, but there is no charging there either.

LOS ANGELES County news from Noel Adams 07/15/02:
I was down at the Santa Monica pier on Saturday afternoon and saw somehting interesting. They have about 6 or 7 spaces for electric vehicles on the Pier and they have a sign up that says "No Parking Electric Vehicles exempt" or something to that effect. The parking lot was busy and there was a guy in a minivan trying to find a parking space. He pulled into one of the EV Spaces, saw the sign and backed out again. He then pulled into a second space, again looked at the sign and backed out. It took him a third in read out before he twigged they were all the same. The signage was very effective, nobody ices those spots.

Both the SPI and the AVCON charger are down at this site. The wires have been cut at the junction box.
    Also,
Newport Beach Fashion Island AVCON charger is down. System Failure light.

ORANGE COUNTY news from Will Korthof 9/6/02:
I was just down at the Seal Beach Pier, which is an excellent public charging site. Actually, it would be even better except that there's a broken inductive charger there. It's actually been broken for the past 3 months or longer---I even called it in to CFCI.
Unfortunately, CFCI still hasn't been able to replace it. I'm not sure what's happening ... but it's too bad.
In the mean time, there be careful when you go to the Seal Beach pier to recharge---there are 2I and 2C chargers, but there are a couple EV1 drivers (including my mom) who like to stop and charge.
If you try to use the westernmost inductive charger, be aware that the paddle is very much broken. There are bare wires sticking out, and it might not be safe....

ORANGE COUNTY NEWS from Kenny Fried 2/15/03:

I usually need about 3/4 charge to get home. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one using that charger.
Also, on that same message I wrote about Saddleback last year, I mentioned the charger at Homebase ( Home 2 Home ) Foothill Ranch might be going dead - it's still up and running even though the store is boarded up.

ORANGE COUNTY news from D. Robinson 5/17/02:
A brand new bank of approximately 14 Chargers both Conductive and Inductive with dedicated parking for RAV-4s was juist finished at the Irvine Metrolink train station. There are almost as many RAV-4 automobiles parked there for a program being initiated by a group of companies for the purpose of ride sharing and commuting to and from the station. The cars are the first generation conductive type from a pool, and they are in mint condition. They were nice enough to include 4 inductive small paddle chargers so I take advantage of them periodically. The organization is called ZEVNet. Their website is www.zevnet.org if you are interested in finding out more. I have charged my vehicle there several times with no problem. It's well illuminated, has a 24 hour roving security guard, and is about half mile off the interstate 5. I don't know if charging is limited to the commuter cars, however I doubt it. It's sponsored by the University of California at Irvine. Travelling south from LA on the Interstate 5 diamond lane take the Barranca exit and turn left at the dead end. About 500 yards to the right is a Costco store with two well maintained small paddle chargers of their own. A mile further down onthe left is the Metrolink Station. There are about 16 small paddle chargers within a very short drive of the freeway almost exactly equidistant between San Diego and Los Angeles and a sanctuary for the traveling small paddle user. At Costco one can snack, shop, rest and charge at this halfway rest stop.

    News for Riverside County

RIVERSIDE COUNTY NEWS from George Steinheimer 3/8/03:
The Magnecharger in Norco is a large paddle gen1 charger with a locked door and no power.
The same goes for the EVI conductive charger, locked door and no power. I checked the breaker on the Magnecharger and also the breakers on the power panel near the chargers and nothing turned on the chargers. [We have some reports that this is small paddle and functioning. Checking. --Ed. 3/20/03.]

RIVERSIDE COUNTY NEWS from Barrington Daltrey 3/4/03:
I have finally double-checked and the Moreno Valley shopping center charger is definitely dead. It's the old "big paddle" kind. I did try pushing the circuit breaker button, but nada.
There is one at Tyler Mall, off the 91 on the SW of Riverside. However, every time I have been to the mall the sole spot is parked in by a Green EV-1 with Michigan plates. I think perhaps this is the one that is a company car and belongs to a neighbor who works for GM on the EV-1 electronics.
There is no adjacent parking spot, so whoever has the charger, has the charger. I don't know whether perhaps his wife works at Tyler Mall and uses the parking spot or if the vehicle is more or less permanently parked out there. All I know is the charging spot is never available when I show up.
There are also some chargers in downtown Riverside, which would not be too much out of the way for a trip in the Moreno Valley/Sun City direction. One is at the MetroLink station and another is in a parking garage. Both would be accessed via 91 rather than 60/215, but they are only about 5 - 7 miles from the Moreno Valley Mall charger.
Also, you didn't ask, but I posted a message last Sunday indicating that the Sun City charger (at the library) pretends to work, but doesn't seem to actually do any significant charging.
It's in the same general direction that you are inquiring about.
    From Kenny Fried 2/26/03:
I checked the Moreno Valley Mall about a year ago, while taking a busload of students there for lunch. It was located close to the mall on the south side, not way out in the lot, so it's not too hard to find.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY NEWS from Jeff Church 2/26/03:
I used the downtown Temecula charger a few weeks ago and it was fine. The charger at Lake Elsinore at Denny's is inop, and there is no power to my understanding. (CFC I think is working on it ).

A very old but very functional Gen I large paddle charger. I wasn't charged to park there and wasn't a hotel guest (family member was but I wasn't asked either). I think they charge $6 to park overnight.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY NEWS from Bill Mason 1/26/03:
There are two Gen I pedestal-mount inductive chargers in front of the Marriott Desert Springs Hotel and Resort in Palm Desert, CA, neither of which is functioning. The one on the left has power, but has a damaged cord retractor and won't activate. The one on the right has no power. Both are in despicable condition. I believe there are two conductive chargers and they are still there; I did not check their status, but will do so and let you know.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY NEWS from Jon Knepher 2/20/03:
    Costco La Mesa:
There is one good SPI, one cracked paddle but operational SPI, and an AVCON with a brand new cord/connector but a broken kWHr meter (on disconnect it says the time connected then 'bong bong bong ICS200A or B service required' when it should say the power used, but it gives plenty of power). ... The cracked-paddle SPI still has some integrity to it...

SAN DIEGO COUNTY NEWS from Jonathan Knepher 1/19/03:
    Scripps Memorial of La Jolla
There is now an AVCON (ICS200) in the middle of the two LPIs.

Costco, Carlsbad: New signs added: "Effective June 1, 2002, Costco will now tow any vehicle, except electric, at owner's expense". Neither spot was ICED! [Is this a new standard Costco sign? We'd love to see a photo of this sign. -Ed.]

SAN DIEGO County news from Phil Karn 6/12/02:
I visited Kearny Mesa Toyota this morning.... I found a single small-paddle TAL magnecharger in the service area. You turn right after entering the area, driving toward the large microwave tower next door at the TV station. The charger is on your left up against a small building with a bunch of air conditioners overhead. The exact GPS coordinates are: 32.82862N 117.14462W 125m I did not actually use the charger, but it did have power.
