The EV1 features a liquid-cooled electric motor. This 137 horsepower motor goes from 0 to 13,500 rpm with no shifting. The wide rpm range and torque curve eliminate the need for a traditional transmission — one set of gears now does the job of many. What does this mean in terms of performance? The electric car can go 0 to 60 mph in under 9 seconds. Its top governed speed is 80 mph. Under test track conditions, it can go much faster. In fact, in 1994, a specially modified EV1 prototype set a land-speed record of 183 miles per hour.
